Weight Loss Surgery For Patients Without Medical Insurance

We have been in communication with the NSW Department and Ministry of Health for the last four years or so discussing the possibility of allowing unwell people with weight-related problems the opportunity to have surgery in Public Hospitals. The Minister of Health has announced that surgery is going to be offered in Public Hospitals however the details about when surgery will be offered and to whom is going to take longer to determine. It is likely that each Area Health Service in New South Wales will be expected to set up Medical Weight Management Clinics and patients will be able to be moved from these Clinics into the hospitals for surgery. It is unlikely that surgery will therefore occur until these Weight Management Clinics are started (1-2 years) and it seems likely that at the moment only patients with diabetes will be offered surgery.

As our negotiations with the Department of Health and the Area Heath Service evolves I will update this website so that patients considering surgery can remain informed.
